Okra and Tomatoes

2 c. okra (short tender pods)
3 Tbsp. butter or bacon drippings
2 medium onions, chopped
3 or 4 ripe tomatoes or 1 can canned tomatoes
Salt and pepper to taste

Put butter or drippings into skillet, add onion. Slice okra 1/4 inch thick directly into the skillet on top of the onions. Cover and simmer until onion is soft, or about 5 minutes. (If using fresh tomatoes, have them peeled.) Add cut up tomatoes and continue to simmer, covered, until okra is tender. Season and serve immediately.
